Welcome
Like most other terms, reduce, reuse and recycle can be interpreted differently. Reduce, reuse and recycle for engineers may entail reduction of classes through proxies, reuse of old notebooks to scribble class notes, and recycling old projects and papers as one's own.but, the technical meaning of the word 'reduce' means to simplify a mathematical expression, de-oxidize, or simply lower or shrink. Similarily the word 'recycle' means to repeat a cycle. Computer Science students will identify 'reuseability' with the likelihood of using a source code to add new functionality with little or no modification. But, contemporary usage of this word is almost exclusively associated with waste management. And rightly so. Reduce, reuse and recycle comprise the three R's of waste management. It is a mantra almost everyone knows today, thanks partly to Captain Planet.
Today the world's population is estimated to be around 6.2 billion. With new forms of waste like nuclear and e-waste cropping up as a consequence of technology, it is implicit that technology must also be used to check pollution and degradation of the environment. Reduce, Reuse and Recycle form the pillars on which the survival of Mother Earth rests. As time seems to run out, the relevance of the three R's increases manifold. So, to espouse the message of fulfilment of the three R's through technology is the purpose and theme of Confluence 2k10, the annual techno-management festival of NIT Rourkela.
NIT Rourkela, founded as an REC(Regional Engineering College), located in the steel town of Rourkela, is an Institue Of National Importance and one of premier Institutes for technicale education in the country. Confluence serves as a platform for budding engineers of the region to test and hone their practical skills. Three days filled with excitement and activity awaits the students every year during January, when pleasant weather and warm sunshine reflects the spirits of the students. The various workshops, robotics and management events, and guest lectures are some of the crowd pulling events organised.
